Half-hoping

From The Spectator, 27 June, 1992
Half-hoping
by Anon (late 7th century)
translated by Graeme Wilson

We parted; but, half-hoping
She might perhaps relent,
She might perhaps have spoken words
She had not really meant,
Over my shoulder, now now and then,
I looked back as I went.
